There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over the Outer Banks in winter. The crowds are gone, the dunes stretch on uninterrupted, and the light — low, silvery, and soft — rolls across the sand in a way that summer just can't match. It's one of my favorite times to photograph families on the coast, and this session was a perfect example of why.

why winter at the outer banks works

Most people picture beach portraits happening in July, but winter has its own kind of magic. The beaches are wide open, the light is flattering all day long instead of just at golden hour, and there's something about bundled-up layers and windblown hair that makes a family feel more like themselves — less posed, more present. This family leaned all the way into that feeling, and it made for some of my favorite frames of the season.

moments from the dunes

We spent the session moving between the open beach and the surrounding dunes, chasing the kind of natural, unscripted moments that end up being everyone's favorites — the child racing ahead through the sand, parents laughing as the wind messed up every "perfect" pose, a quiet embrace as the light started to fade. Winter on the Outer Banks means you get the whole beach to yourselves, so there was room to really let the day unfold instead of rushing between spots.

Some of the most special frames weren't the posed family portrait at all — they were the in-between moments: a dad swinging his daughter over the waves, the family playing on the (cold!) sand, a mom's hand tucked into her husband's coat pocket against the wind.

planning your own family session

If a carefree, child-led portrait sessions sounds like your family's kind of day, here's what I'd suggest:

  • Dress in classic, comfortable clothes. I’ll work with you to find outfits that will look gorgeous and coordinated in your family photos. Depending on location, I may ask you to also bring some flats if we’re expected to walk in uneven terrain.

  • Embrace the unplanned. It's part of the story. Sometimes we’ll have planned to do a few activities, but your kid doesn’t want to do them — and that’s okay. We’ll make do and get creative on the spot!

  • Pack snacks. We’ve got to make sure there’s enough in your kiddos’ bellies so that they can run around and be themselves during our hour-long session. It keeps energies light and happy.

I'd love to help your family capture a season this beautiful, whether it's a windswept winter day on the Outer Banks or a more local Northern Virginia area.

Book your session today and let's start planning your family's story together.
