There are plenty of spots in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area that I absolutely love using as a backdrop for family portraits. Right there at the top has to be Oatlands Historic House and Gardens tucked away in Leesburg, Virginia.

For couples, it’s a romantic setting with lush greenery and fantastic views. For families with energetic toddlers, it isn't just a photography location—it’s a four-acre playground filled with color and wonder.

Here are more reasons why this Leesburg treasure is among my favorite places to capture your family’s most joyful moments.

A Natural Wonderland for Little Explorers

We all know that young children don’t like to sit still and say "cheese"—and they shouldn't have to! My photography style is all about capturing those authentic giggles, curious glances, and wandering feet.

The terraced gardens at Oatlands are perfect for young kids to roam around in. Between the winding stone paths and the hidden nooks behind the boxwoods, your toddler will be too busy exploring the "secret garden" to realize they’re in the middle of a photo shoot. This movement allows us to capture those bright, candid smiles that truly reflect your child’s personality.

Tips for Your Session at Oatlands

  • The Best Time: We’ll aim for "Golden Hour"—the hour before sunset—when the light is softest and the garden feels most peaceful.

  • What to Wear: Think soft neutrals, pastels, or light floral patterns. These soft, muted colors are easy to pair with family members’ different outfits, and won’t take away attention from the focus — you! A note for the moms: there are gravel paths and some steep steps, so it may be good for you to pack an extra pair of walking shoes to get around.

  • The Parking Situation: Parking is easy at Oatlands. There’s an open parking lot right by the admission center and there’s plenty of space. Parallel parking skills not needed.

Let’s Capture the Joy

Tips for Photographers

There is a fee to take photographs at the location, and you can either purchase a day pass, or a season pass. Depending on how often you’ll want to use this location, you may want to go ahead with the season pass since it’s valid a year from purchase.
